A Day at Storm King

This past weekend, my friend convinced me to take a break from school and come with him and his friend to Storm King Art Center in upstate New York. I have never been to upstate New York, or any further up than the Bronx. It was a day trip, just an hour bus ride. It was quite chilly most of the day, but the when the sun came out it was just warm enough to feel good outside. I really enjoyed the fields and sculptures. Every piece of art was strategically placed and the landscape was designed with the thought in mind of the viewer and how a person could approach the artwork. The entire complex is outside except for a small museum building that houses a few more sculptures. We brought our lunch because there are no “hot meals”, the center only supplies cold sandwiches, coffee, and tea at an outdoor cafe and few hot dog trucks.

I highly suggest visiting, perhaps a little earlier than when we visited, that way more of the Fall leaves are still on the trees. The Woodbury Common Outlets are nearby as well, if you are interested in shopping. I did not go, but it was a popular bus option. There are a few ways to get there; you can take the train to Dia Beacon and then request a bus to Storm King, or there are two bus options – one includes a straight connection from Port Authority in Manhattan to Storm King, this package includes the museum fare (this is option we did!), the other option is the bus to Storm King from Manhattan and then a few hours later the bus will pick you up and take you to Woodbury Outlets. You can also drive up there if you have a car, there are many parking lots.

My suggestion would be to go early morning or around 10am and spend the afternoon there until it closes. It takes a really long time to walk around the complex. It is much larger than the map seems. Definitely bring a camera and a group of friends, it is so much fun to coordinate photoshoots, walk around, and talk amongst friends in the fields of art!

Enjoy the photo diary below, it is long but I love every photo we took!
